Replacing a Roof in El Paso, Step by Step
Roofs in this city wear out from sun, grit and sudden rain far more than from hurricanes. Summer heat dries asphalt until it turns brittle, spring wind scours every edge, and monsoon cloudbursts test each drain. Our job is to get a capable local roofer onto yours.
Plenty of El Paso houses hide flat or low-slope roofs behind parapet walls that drain through scuppers. Southwest-style homes often wear tile, and newer pitched subdivisions tend to carry shingles. Coating a sound flat roof counts as a restoration; tearing it off and rebuilding is a replacement.

How a Request Turns Into an Estimate
- Send a short request. Use the form or call (915) 555-0184 and describe the trouble you see.
- One roofer receives it. Your details go to a single independent roofer who works in El Paso, never to a list of strangers.
- The roof gets a close look. The roofer checks the covering, flashing and drainage, then walks you through the findings.
- You weigh a written estimate. Compare it with other bids if you like, and decide without any push from us.
What You Can Request Here
Five kinds of roof work can start from this site, and each page explains the job and the questions worth asking.
What a Failing Roof Looks Like
None of these proves a roof is finished, but each deserves a professional opinion.
- Ceiling stains after rain. Brown rings or drips after a monsoon storm mean water slipped past the covering or flashing.
- Water sitting on a flat roof. Puddles that linger for days often point to clogged scuppers or a low spot in the deck.
- Curled or bald shingles. Heat dries asphalt out, and granules piling up in the gutters show the top layer wearing thin.
- Blisters and open seams. Bubbles and splits in built-up or modified bitumen roofing let moisture creep underneath.
- A dip along the roofline. A sag deserves a prompt inspection, since wet or weakened wood may sit below.

A Quick Read on Your Roof
Unsure whether a patch will do? The five-question repair-or-replace quiz asks about age, material, visible wear, storms and past repairs. Only a roofer on your roof can say for sure.
Hail Season and Your Roof
Two supercells crossed El Paso County, Texas, on September 16, 2009, pelting the east side along I-10 with golf ball-sized hail. The National Weather Service estimates the damage topped $150 million, which ranks it as the most expensive hail storm the city has on record.
Severe hail is most frequent in May and June, according to NWS, and returns for a smaller peak in October. Monsoon season runs June 15 to September 30, and the record gust is 84 mph, with strong non-storm winds most common in March and April.
After a storm, a roofer can climb up, record what changed and write an estimate. Any claim is yours to file and settle with the insurer. The storm and hail damage page has more.

What Drives the Price of a Roof
Roof size, pitch, material, old layers coming off and soft decking all move the figure. Published estimates give a rough frame:
| Cost row | Figure | Source (year) |
|---|---|---|
| El Paso re-roof, average | about $7,400 | HomeAdvisor, 2026 |
| El Paso asphalt shingles, per sq ft | about $4–$6 | HomeBlue, 2024 |
| Texas architectural shingles, per sq ft | about $4.50–$7.50 | HomeAdvisor, 2026 |
| El Paso metal roofing, per sq ft | about $6–$10 | HomeBlue, 2024 |
| Flat roof (modified bitumen or built-up), per sq ft | about $4–$10 | HomeAdvisor, 2026 |
These are third-party averages, not quotes. For a ballpark sized to your home, try the cost calculator or the cost guide.
Why Requests Start on This Page
- Nothing to pay. The referral is free for homeowners; roofers may pay us when a request reaches them.
- One contact, not a dozen. A single independent roofer gets your details, so your phone stays quiet.
- Terms on paper. Ask for every line item in writing: tear-off, decking, underlayment, flashing, material and cleanup.
- Permit facts up front. Inside city limits, the City wants a building permit for a re-roof, except when under 25% of a house's roof covering is being replaced.

Where Requests Are Accepted
Besides El Paso, requests come from Socorro, TX, Horizon City, TX, San Elizario, TX, Canutillo, TX and Anthony, TX. Each handles permits its own way; see all service areas.
Serving the El Paso Community
The 2020 Census counted 678,815 people in El Paso, and about 60.8% of homes are owner-occupied. With a median owner home value of $184,500, a new roof ranks among the largest repair bills a family here will face, so this site sticks to clear numbers and written terms.

Questions Homeowners Ask
Will the City want a permit for my new roof?
Inside city limits, yes, unless the job covers under 25% of a house's roofing. Planning & Inspections at 811 Texas Ave., (915) 212-0104, issues it and does a final inspection after the work. A residential roofing permit lapses roughly a month after it is issued, so the job should start promptly. Your roofer normally pulls it.
Is there a state license I can look up?
No. Texas has no state roofing license. The City of El Paso, however, makes contractors renew a registration annually before it lets them pull permits. Ask whether the roofer is registered, request proof of liability insurance and references, and make sure the company has a local address.
What if a roofer offers to skip my deductible?
Say no. Under Texas law the deductible is yours to pay, and no roofer is allowed to offer to cover, rebate or waive it. Any insurance-paid roofing contract worth $1,000 or more has to print that rule on it. You can report a deductible offer to the Texas Attorney General.
Can new roofing go over my old roof?
Sometimes. Most houses are limited to two layers of roofing, and beyond that the old material has to be stripped. Your roofer can tell you where yours stands. A full tear-off also gives the roofer a chance to check, and replace, soft wood in the deck underneath.
Can I just coat my flat roof instead?
Only if it is still in decent shape. A coating goes over a flat roof that is still sound, so it is a restoration and usually costs less. A replacement removes the worn layers and builds a new roof. A wet deck or widespread failure may rule out coating.
Ready for a Real Number?
Averages only go so far. Send a request and one local roofer will contact you to book a free inspection in El Paso, then leave you a written estimate to study. You are under no obligation to hire anyone.
